Easy Disney String Art Easy Winnie the Pooh String Art

With so many of usa even so stuck at home, it's of import to proceed to keep busy and find fun things to practice. So, I decided to craft it up with my very ain Mickey cord art!

You probably all know almost string art. It's non a new thing, and it'southward been a adequately popular crafting trend for a while now.

String art is wonderful considering y'all can actually make information technology whatsoever you want it to be! Whether y'all want a butterfly, a centre, or a Mickey, y'all can do it with cord!

It's very elementary, too. Y'all showtime out with a board, and then yous hammer your nails into your desired shape, and then thread cord through the nails for your fill color!

There are a few nuances to information technology, despite what it boils downward to. Today, I am going to prove you how I made my Mickey string art. I'll even throw in a few bonus ideas if yous desire customize your own!

What You'll Demand

what you'll need

Here'southward what you'll demand. Photograph by Leah Sikes

  • Board (whatsoever size you want your finished piece to be)
  • Nails (I used 1 i/ii inch finishing nails)
  • Hammer
  • Embroidery floss
  • Pigment (optional)

I have just a couple notes on the items you'll demand to go to make your Mickey string art.

For my lath, I used a piece of scrap plywood from my parent's backyard. It's about 1/2″ thick and mostly a perfect foursquare. I didn't measure out it, but it's around 9″ square.

Considering it was fleck wood, it had some imperfections and coloring changes. Then I decided to paint information technology. Keep in mind if you paint, it will take a bit longer to get your final piece.

The nails I used worked perfectly fine, but y'all might notice you want a slightly larger caput on the top to keep the thread from slipping. You might likewise demand shorter or longer nails depending on the board you employ. But see what works best for you.

Painting

You tin skip this section if you've decided not to pigment your board.

Really, painting is very straightforward. Get a castor, your paint color, and get to town. Lay out something so y'all don't get pigment everywhere.

I concluded up doing iii coats of pigment, with only one coat on the four edges. The tertiary coat was considering the template I used for Mickey got some ink residue on my pretty white paint, and I had to cover it upwardly.

I besides got really tired of waiting for it to dry out, and sped up the procedure with a hair dryer.

Brand Your Template

Before you start hammering the nails in, y'all have to have your shape downwardly!

My first thought was to apply a plate and a cup to make perfect circles for Mickey's caput and ears, directly on my board. That didn't work every bit well as I wanted.

Commencement, I tried laying my shapes directly onto the lath. Photo by Leah Sikes

I plant I was going to need to tweak it too much, and experiment with my plate sizes a little. Plus, getting it symmetrical was going to exist a pain.

My next thought was to cutting my template out of a brown newspaper handbag. This worked much better because I was able to change the shapes slightly if I needed to, and I folded the paper in half to get Mickey'due south caput perfectly symmetrical!

I still used plates and cups to get circles, but you can utilize whatsoever you accept effectually the house.

My first template was a bosom. Mickey's ears were as well small, and it felt too circular, somehow.

The second time around, I made his head smaller and ears a lilliputian bigger. So, I squished the ears just a smidge. If y'all look advisedly, a lot of the Mickey heads don't have perfectly round ears!

I was much happier with my 2d template.

Lay it on your board, and very lightly trace information technology. Oh, and be careful that your newspaper bag doesn't transfer any ink onto your board. It happened to me!

Nail It In!

Beginning hammering your nails around the outline you just made!

I started at a point, and and so only tried to evenly space them as I went effectually. It really doesn't demand to be perfect.

Brand sure you put nails in all the points on your design and then y'all go a nice, well-formed shape at the end.

Also make sure your nails don't become through the back of your board.

By the finish, my fingers were super dirty from handling the nails. I was getting black smudges all over my white lath.

Y'all just need to loop information technology around the nail and drag your string back to another nail.

I tried to make sure each nail had at to the lowest degree i loop on it before I started double looping, for the virtually office. Notwithstanding, if you lot want to do a border effectually your pattern, you should probably do that commencement.

I really ran out of string before I did my border, merely I found some more that was almost identical in colour. It'due south slightly lighter, but you can hardly tell. Plus, the slight change kind of makes for a fun layering upshot.

A couple things to keep in mind:

  • Keep your string tight every bit yous pull information technology from i nail to the other
  • Don't do keep the string correct at the top of your nail, specially if it has a small head like mine practice
  • Endeavour to accept some variety in the directions you pull your cord

And make sure yous stay within your shape! Information technology's easier than you'd think to pull a string and go beyond the nail boundary you've created.

Once you're done, necktie off your string simply like you did at the beginning. And that'due south information technology!

Bonus Ideas!

Hither are few ideas you could exercise to modify upwards your Mickey string fine art!

  • Go heavier on the string, and totally fill in the color. I wanted to really become the string look, so I didn't fill up all the empty infinite. Just remember you'll need a lot more string!
  • Make a line across the heart of your Mickey head, and two ovals below that. It'll look like a little Mickey head with his signature cherry-red bottoms, blackness body, and yellow buttons!
  • Add a bow and do that in a different colour to make Minnie Mouse!
  • Put a small heart or small Mickey head within your big Mickey, and leave it empty of string. It'll brand a cute cut-out effect!
